Resident of Gloversville and retired registered nurse, Cynthia L. Morey and other visitors to historic Myers
Park saw a beautiful park badly in need of tender loving care and dedicated themselves to that end. Over
the years some volunteers have dropped out and others have joined the small band of gardeners and
others dedicated to making Myers Park a friendly, appealing and safe place for all to enjoy. In addition to
the Friends of Myers Park other groups joined forces with the local folks interested in once again bringing
Myers Park back to its original natural state of beauty.

Helping to beautify Myers Park in the summer of 2000 was the AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America
and AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps. Some of these bright and ambitious youngsters were
from as far away as Maryland, Arizona, Delaware, New York, Michigan and Wisconsin. They worked in
concert with the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce staying at the YWCA in Gloversville. Members of
Friends of Myers Park tried to make their new young friends feel more at home by providing them with a
home cooked meal, home relaxation, along with pizza etc every now and then.
Numerous other groups and businesses assisted Friends of Myers Park over the years as well. Some
labored in the gardens and wooded areas while others donated such things as food items, bird houses,
gold fish, flowers, shrubs and trees.

In 2005 the Gloversville High School Class of 2008 adopted Myers Park as their class project. They
commenced their pledge to help the park by setting aside one Saturday to help clean up the park. A group
of adult volunteers including city officials and employees assisted them in raking out the wooded areas
after which everyone enjoyed a hardy luncheon provided by Friends of Myers Park. The day’s activities
culminated with the planting of a new flowering red crab tree for which the Class of 2008 donated one
hundred dollars to the park.

Throughout their years at Gloversville High School, the Class of 2008 was religious about honoring their
pledge to assist and promote Myers Park. They raked leaves, dug up lily bulbs from the woods and
transplanted them to other areas of the park and did odds and ends of painting. The Class of 2008 was
instrumental in obtaining a $500 grant for the park through our local Wal-mart. These young people and
their counselors deserve credit for both their commitment and their follow through.
In September 2008 employees from Spray Nine, participating in the United Way “Day of Caring” program,
assisted Friends of Myers Park by helping clean and prepare the gardens and shrubs at Myers Park for the
long and cold winter ahead. Two groups of Spray Nine employees were released from work to participate in
the annual United Way Program encouraging volunteerism in the community.
Friends of Myers Park promote the Park by participating in community activities. They won first prize in the
2006 Halloween Main Street pole decorating contest.
Friends of Myers Park have worked in concert with The Fulton County Historical Society and Museum
on a project entitled “A Pictorial History of Gloversville” which is a DVD of a collection of pictures and
illustrations of Gloversville from the late 1700's through 2008. DVDs are available for a donation of $20 at
Bowman’s Market 50 East Pine. They are also available at the Fulton County Historical Society & Museum,
237 Kingsboro Avenue. DVD's can also be ordered at the Chamber of Commerce on the 4 corners,
Gloversville. All checks should be made payable to the Fulton County Historical Society. Both organizations
equally share in the proceeds.

this purpose.
In October, final clean up of the various garden areas was done by the Boy Scouts and parents of Troop 112
Johnstown along with members of Friends of Myers Park.
Once again in September the United Way “Day of Caring” came through for the park by teaming up Friends
of Myers Park with Wal-mart Distribution employees to help ready the park for the coming winter. The group
trimmed bushes, cut dead plants, raked and carried dead limbs out of the wooded areas. Later the debris
was chipped by the Department of Public Works and returned to the soil. The following week Wal-mart
Distribution employees returned to do even more work in the wooded areas.
Individuals, unrelated to the various groups, who gave of their time to clean the nature trails, stain the
gazebos, build new trellises, and paint picnic tables, were Kathy Dingman, Michael Viscusi, Larry Getman,
Dean Kleitgen, Miguel Perez, Bradley Chain, Jean Chain, Bob VanAvery of Fonda, and John Kessler of
Mayfield.
The Frontier CAT TEAM worked with members of Friends of Myers Park by raking the second level of the
park. The Clean Scene group from Fulton County Court spent time cleaning brush from the wooded areas.
Plans for a festive celebration at the park brought various groups and individuals to the park to assist in
preparing for the August 22nd anniversary celebration. Friends of Myers Park hired painter Tom Fudger to
scrap, prime and paint the main building and bandstand. Both Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams were
good enough to donate the paint.
The year 2009 marked the 100 year anniversary of Myers Park. Max Myers, son of Herman Myers, purchased
land on Burr Hill and donated it to the City of Gloversville for use as a city park in 1909. The Park was later
dedicated in his father’s memory.
Friends of Myers Park co-sponsored an Easter Hunt with the BID in 2007. Children delighted in having their
picture taken with the Easter Bunny. They also partnered with the YWCA and the Fulton County Historical
Society and Museum in 2008 hosting a similar Easter egg hunt.
“Friends of Myers Park” not only tends the park but also raises money for the park and promotes the park
by participating in various community activities. The group raises money by collecting cans, bottles, selling
hot dogs, polish sausage & soda. Friends of Myers Park have participated annually in Railfest since 2005.
